Four killed in St James police operation, INDECOM probes
A police operation aimed at tracking down men linked to a recent murder in St James ended in bloodshed on Wednesday morning, with four men shot and killed and INDECOM launching an investigation into the deadly incident.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) confirmed to THE STAR that it has begun probing the circumstances surrounding the fatal shootings in Retirement, St James.
Preliminary reports indicate that members of the security forces were carrying out an operation in the community when they reportedly came under attack.
An alleged shootout followed, leaving four men dead.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
The latest killings come less than 24 hours after seven men were fatally shot in separate security force incidents across three parishes, pushing the number of people killed in fatal police shootings to 11 within a day.
According to INDECOM, 143 people had been killed in fatal shootings involving members of the security forces up to June 9 this year.
INDECOM investigators are expected to process the scene, collect statements and examine forensic and other evidence as part of their probe.
Both the police and INDECOM are continuing investigations into the incident.
