Pinkney eyes international netball league placement
Sunshine Girl Amanda Pinkney is hoping for an international breakthrough to join fellow teammates in the Australian Suncorp Super Netball League.
"I would love to go to the Fevers, because our captain Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard and Shanice Beckford (are there)," she expressed. "But if not Fevers, definitely the Thunderbirds because we have Latanya Wilson and others from Jamaica."
The 25-year-old goal shooter said a breakthrough in the world's premier club competition would benefit her as she seeks overall development.
As such, she is working hard to make the national team for the upcoming Horizon Netball Series between the Sunshine Girls and England Roses.
"I am working really hard to make that team and also to make the team that should be going to Australia and Commonwealth (Games) as well, so I am putting in the work.
"I do know that I will have to play goal attack as well, because we do have the three tall shooters, so I want to build myself in that role," Pinkney assessed.
She has already started putting in the work, with the five-week Red Stripe Flavours Netball Jamaica Elite League which saw her team, Manchester Spurs finishing behind winners Kingston Hummingbirds after a 52-50 matchup at the recent finals held at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.
"For this season I had to step up for my team. I had to step up in a sense where I (show them) I can shoot," Pinkney stated.
TWO-POINTERS
"I wanted to show them that it is not only the ones I can take but I can take the twos as well, because I know that in the overseas leagues, they do have the two-pointers and I know I'm very good at that so to show myself in that area is kind of a plus for me in this tournament," she said.
The local league also gave her the opportunity to train and play with international players, as for the first time, the competition featured a player from England, Danielle Jordan-Taft and a player from Australia, Hannah Kuhar.
Pinkney said this was a great experience for her as it was a learning opportunity.
"It was a good feeling because we always want to go to Australia or New Zealand to play netball so to have one of them come to our country and want to play with us, that is a big deal for us," She shared.
"I think playing with Hannah was very good. We teach her our playing style and she would give us an inside of their playing style. She was a pretty good addition to our team," Pinkney noted of Kuhar, who played with the Manchester Spurs.
Often featured on the Sunshine Girls Fast5 teams as a goal shooter, Pinkney hopes to represent in other competitions in the goal attack position as well, and that's where her season's goals are placed.
"Growing as a player and working on the goal attack position to show Jamaica that I can play goal attack as well and not just goal shooter. So going forward I would like my coach to work me in that goal attack so that I can get the feel of that position," she said.
