Jaii Frais among those shot during Big Wall shooting, suspects in custody
Popular influencer Jaii Frais is now under police guard in hospital after a wild shooting at the Big Wall Carnival after-party left three men nursing gunshot wounds and sent patrons running for cover at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre.
Jaii Frais, whose given name is Jhaedee Richards, was shot during the chaos, along with 39-year-old Jeremy Watson and 36-year-old Trevor Twaite. All three were rushed to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where Twaite remains in critical condition undergoing surgery.
Reports indicate he was shot, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police reports are that the shooting unfolded about 9:30 p.m., after Richards arrived at the venue with his girlfriend. He reportedly told investigators that he was attacked by a group of about 15 men after leaving the restroom, during which one of the men allegedly pointed a firearm at him.
Richards claims he managed to disarm the attacker.
The situation reportedly spiralled further when a music producer, said to be known to Richards, allegedly pulled a firearm and opened fire while the vlogger was being assaulted. Police say Richards then returned fire using the weapon he had taken before fleeing the scene.
Investigators revealed that Richards later handed over the firearm to a police officer at the venue before realising he had been shot. He remains in hospital under police guard.
The producer, who is reportedly a licensed firearm holder, is now in custody at the Half-Way Tree Police Station as investigators continue to piece together the incident. A Glock nine millimetre pistol was seized from him, while another firearm was handed over by Richards.
Police say Watson, believed to be a bystander, was also injured in the crossfire.
Meanwhile, organisers of Big Wall have expressed concern over the shocking incident.
"We are deeply saddened and troubled by the incident that occurred this evening, where a patron discharged a firearm and injured persons. Our hearts are with those injured, their families, and everyone who was present and affected," the statement said.
"The safety of our patrons, staff, and partners is and has always been paramount. We are cooperating fully with the Jamaica Constabulary Force as they lead the investigation and will provide any support needed to ensure accountability."
"For over a decade, we have built a safe, inclusive, and world-class carnival experience with an unblemished record of safety and professionalism. We will not allow one individual's actions to define us."
The organisers also apologised to patrons and sponsors, noting that the incident disrupted what is usually a celebratory event.
Investigators from the St Andrew Central Scene of Crime Unit have since processed the scene, recovering spent shells, a blood sample, and other items as the probe continues.
