Lewis back at Portmore United
Portmore United head coach Shavar Thomas said the return of national player Andre 'LA' Lewis is a major boost in his team's quest to defend its Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) title this season.
The 24-year-old Lewis marks his return to local football after two seasons with Portland Timbers 2 in the United Soccer League in the United States, with a 41st-minute goal against Humble Lion on Sunday, as Portmore came away 2-0 winners. Ryan Wellington was the other scorer for Portmore in the fourth minute.
"He was without club overseas and we are privileged to have him in our set-up," said Thomas.
"We know the quality and talent that he has and for him to join us, it is very important for us," he said. "He will help to add depth to our squad and to have him here is big for us."
He added that Lewis' goal against Humble Lion on Sunday is a big motivator for the former national Under-20 player.
"It is a big confident booster for him as well, as it is good for the team to get a goal from one of our midfielders," Thomas said. "He just has to build on this performance that he had on Sunday because getting him fit is going to be key for us going forward."
Portmore top the standings with 47 points, one ahead of Waterhouse and Cavalier who are second and third, respectively, on 45 points.
Thomas added that his team has made good progress this season and they are looking to finish the season on a high.
"The focus is to keep adding points to what we already have and just prepare for the back end of the season when things are going to get a lot tougher in the competition," he said.
