MoBay seek boost from ‘massive win’ against Cavalier
Montego Bay United (MBU) whipped defending champions Cavalier SC 3-1 to remain atop the standings after their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football clash at Jarrett Park in Montego Bay yesterday.
Deonjay Brown opened the scoring for MBU in the fifth minute, and Richardo Ramsey kept the momentum rolling into the second half with a goal at the 48th minute. British native Jahmari Clarke netted MBU's third goal to sink the defending champions deeper. Adrian Reid pulled one goal back for Cavalier in added time.
The result pushes MBU farther ahead to 61 points, while Cavalier remain sixth on 42 points. Portmore United remain fourth on 51 points after a 2-1 loss to Dunbeholden, which climbed to eighth on 41 points. Chapelton Maroons, following a 2-2 draw with Molynes United, stay seventh on 42 points. Molynes are 13th on 27.
BOOST MORALE
Xavier Gilbert, MBU's head coach, expressed optimism, hoping the win will boost team morale.
"It was a massive win just for the team itself because we lost one and drew one," he said of their recent form. "I am happy for the win and I am sure it will bring back some spirit and confidence among the players.
"There are three competitions happening, some are playing for top six, top two, and some fighting to save relegation," said Gilbert. "Our next game is against Harbour View and they have been managing to get some good result. We haven't beaten them all season and it's going to be tough for us," Gilbert said.
Meanwhile, David Laylor, Cavalier SC's coach, attributed the loss to the team's slow start.
"The objective was to at least come away with a point. MBU is a good team, they're one of the better teams in the competition now.
"We are still accustomed to playing at the highest level here in Jamaica, so I just think we didn't play well enough today against this Montego Bay team.," he added.
Both teams were rewarded a penalty, but they were unable to capitalise.
